How do I become a member of the fire department?

To become a member of our family you must, at a minimum, pass the State test for the 36 hour basic firefighting course.  The class is taught several times a year in various places throughout Delaware and surrounding counties.  There is a PDF form here to fill out and return to the department if you are interested.

Are you a full time fire department?

No we are not.  We are a paid on call department.  This means that each and every firefighter carries a small pager that is activated by the Delaware County 911 system.  Once the pager is activated the firefighters will respond to the station and react according to the type of emergency.  While we are not staffed full time, there are many firefighters doing duties at the fire house at all hours of the day or night.

We are fortunate to have Delaware County Medic 8 in very near proximity to us. They are of course full time and you can learn more about them here.

What is your ISO rating?

Effective January 1, 2006 the Scioto Township Fire Department was awarded a Class 5 ISO rating. The inspection was conducted by the Department of Insurance Office of State Fire Marshall (OSFM), and is required on a regular basis as part of the Ohio Response Rating System (ORRS).  Among other things, the routine inspections look for proper staffing levels, sufficient equipment, proper maintenance of equipment, communications capabilities and availability of a water source. The ORRS rating system ranges from one (highest) to 10 (not recognized as a certified fire department by the state). The Scioto Township Fire Department rating was improved from a 6.

What should I do when an emergency vehicle approaches?

Pull to the right! If an emergency vehicle is approaching you from the rear please pull to the right. If an emergency vehicle is coming at you please pull to the right.  Do not continue to drive after you have seen the emergency vehicle approach you.  When you do this we are not sure whether or not you have seen or heard us coming and creates confusion.  This will help us reach our destinations in a safe and timely manner.  Remember one minute may be the difference between life or death.
